JALAN-JALAN@KUCHING (PART 2)

In my previous post, i've upload Kuching map. Click at the map for a larger view of the map. As mentioned in Jalan-Jalan@Kuching (Part1), in this Part2 , i'll show you around the Cat City itself and some of the tourist hotspots.

So..i will pick Kuching Waterfront as our starting point. Also known as The People Place, Kuching Waterfront was built for the people of Sarawak. It is the place to enjoy, to entertain and be entertained. A heritage to be proud of, and a legacy to pass on to generations to come.
This 1km stretch of waterfront or esplanade with beautiful landscape is located along the curvy Sarawak river.

A number of old buildings have been preserved and incorporated into the design, including the Chinese History Museum, the Sarawak Steamship Building, an open-air theatre and the Square Tower.

Modern additions
to the Waterfront include a restored Chinese pavilion, an observation tower, a tea terrace and the spectacular musical fountains, as well as a number of modern sculptures.

During the daytime, the Waterfront offers excellent views of the Astana, Fort Margherita and the Malay kampungs which line the north bank of the river. You can also reach the other side to get to these three places by a sampan or 'penambang' as we call it . You only have to pay for a few cents for the ride to get across.

These are the 'penambang' or sampan use daily by some of the malay folks to get to the city centre. It's cheaper and fuel/money saver. Don't worry, life jackets are provided on every sampan.

View of the Astana.

Once the home of the White Rajah, it has undergone substantial renovations since the days of the Brooke dynasty. Today it is the official residence of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, the Governor of Sarawak. As the official residence of the governor, it is not open to the public except during special events like the Hari Raya celebration. Visitors are however allowed to stroll around the Astana's beautifully landscaped gardens.

WHAT YOU CAN DO AT THE WATERFRONT? A lot...that's all i can say. It is actually very enjoyable and fun place to visit. You can ride the penambang, buy Sarawak goods and crafts, enjoy some of the snacks and foods sold at the fod stall along the waterfront, and lots more. But also beware of the pickpocketers. Look after your valuable belongings while enjoying yourself there.

NEXT...MAIN BAZAAR (Heaven for Sarawak crafts and goods).

To be continued....
